The intention was to do Base Brown, Green Gable and then on to Great Gable, but the weather soon put paid to that. Given we

were at the back end of June the weather was more like mid to late Autumn

A 3d view of the walk

The walk starts from the popular approach road to Seathwaite Farm

Approaching the Farm gates and the plaque spells out what later became all too apparent

An early view of north face of Base Brown from the start

Through the farm yard and under a passageway that gives access to a bridle path

The bridleway crosses the River Derwent and leads to a ladder stile

Climb over the stile to start the trail over a stone path

The stone path climbs steeply towards Seathwaite slabs

Looking back to the River Derwent

Sourmilk Gill

The path reaches a fork. The right fork leads to a viewing platform for the waterfall

The middle reaches of Sourmilk Gill from the viewing platform. To continue on though take the left fork

Looking back down to Seathwaite Farm from the path

The path leads you to Seathwaite Slabs which is a little tricky and requires a bit of rock handling

From the Slabs the path levels off and leads to a hand gate

The upper reaches of Sourmilk Gill

The track levels slightly from here on heads towards Gillercombe climbing very gently towards the Col

between Base Brown on the left and Green Gable ahead

Looking across Gillercombe towards Raven Crag

The steep and scrambly north face provides the quickest route up to the summit and passes Wainwrights “Fallen Stone”

Nearing the top of the track towards the Col. From there a left turn provides the easier route towards Base Brown summit

Following the ridge line towards the summit

Looking towards Green Gable and peeking above, Great Gable from the summit of Base Brown

The ridge path to Green Gable initially with Great Gable in the back ground. At this point it started to bucket down

which was the signal for a hasty retreat given our lack of suitable clothing. There you go … prepare for EVERYTHING

when you are out on the fells !!!!
