Walk
Overview
A charming short walk with great
views and one which would be an ideal “starter” fell for someone wishing to get
a flavour of fell walking
Approaching Elterwater
from Ambleside via Chapel Stile, an NT car park on the right just before you
enter the village is the start point
for this walk
From the car park follow the tarmac
road round OR take the stone path, either way until you meet a public footpath
on your left that
leads up to Huntingstile
Gap (the dip in the picture below)
Huntingstile Gap
Take the sign posted foot path that
climbs gently up the slope
At the top of the gap the view
opens up towards Dunmail Raise across the still
closed A591
Follow the path from the gap that
leads you gently to ascend Huntingstile Crag. The
view from the small cairn here across to the Coniston
range of fells
From the cairn follow the clear
path that sweeps round the left of Dow Bank. You may if you wish avoid the
climb over the top, however it is
very gentle and has fine views
awaiting those who take the route
Approaching the side path
From the top of Dow Bank, a view
West across to Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and the
Langdale Pikes
Looking North over Grasmere towards
Helm Crag
From the front marker cairn, the
summit of Silver Howe is seen for the firsts time (The high point of the ridge
line)
From the cairn follow the track to
gain access from a number of points to get on the ridge. As you approach the
crags keep right and leave
the main path which carries on to Blea Rigg
This is the “Big Cairn” that AW
mentioned as a feature in Book 3 that describes this walk
Following the ridge path to the
summit. When you reach this fork, take the right hand
path that leads directly to the top
A view of Grasmere and Rydal Water
on the way to the summit
At the summit and its freezing. The
views though to the Langdales are superb
A 360 degree
view from the summit
