Walk Overview

This simple walk from the car park at the end of Nannycatch Road has remarkably
good views across the Irish Sea and Ennerdale towards the higher fells given that
it is only a modest 800 and odd feet high. It can be extended further by adding
on the summit of Dent on the other side of the Udale Plantation. This walk describes
the Flat Fell part only

The car park at the start of the walk

From the A5086 head towards Cleator Moor and turn left at the Church
(we approached from the North via the A66) and travel down a minor road
for about half a mile and look out for a right turn at Nannycatch Road. Travel
as far as you are able down the road to a car park which is free to use and
is capable of holding around a dozen cars. This is the start of the walk

The track climbs steadily

The track climbs gently towards a junction where upon you make
a left turn to climb the Southern face of Flat Fell

Take the left hand fork

Follow the grass trod

Follow the intermittent grassy trod. There is no real right or wrong way here
just keep aiming for the higher ground and all will become apparent

In not much time at all. the ground levels off and the summit cairn comes in to view

Rob and Ken

On the way back down to the car park, we had the great pleasure of bumping into
Ken Owens. Ken, now retired worked for many years with the Cockermouth MRT.
A very experienced Fell walker and cairn builder. It was a pleasure to stop and
chat for a while Ken
