Walk Overview

An opportune time presented itself to journey up to Lakeland this week. The original
plan was to do some of the higher Fells in the Northern region around Blencathra;
however, as a "Plan B" if there was too much snow which we weren`t equipped for,
a two separate lower lying Fells walk in one day in the North Western region. we
decided on Ling Fell and Whinlatter and as we journeyed down the A66 we plumped
for the Plan B option safe in the knowledge that there would be no snow on the
lower levels. For this particular day out we had the dubious pleasure
of Jones the Bastard.

I can really recommend Ling Fell as a great "Family walk" with a clearly defined
and modestly sloped path all the way to the summit

The start of the walk

From the A66 towards Workington follow the signs for Whythop Mill and just under
a mile from the Pheasant Inn at Brumston Bridge there is free car parking for several
cars. At the start of the walk Sue lays out some ground rules regarding the expected
behaviour levels from Jones

Ready for the off

So, with all that cleared up we are ready to set off. Follow the track back down and
cross the bridge on the left

Heading towrards the Farm

Cross the bridge and follow the path as it swings right past Burthwaite Farm

The path leads to a gate

The tarmac path rises gently towards a gate

Setting out on the path

Sue, Ste and Jones set off along the old Corpse Road which climbs very gently
up the side of the Fell

The path swings right

No navigational difficulties at all as the path swings to the right towards the ridge

Turn left at the fork

At the point at which the path forks, take the left hand fork

Thirsty, Jones??

The path makes a hairpin turn

The path has now completed a hairpin bend and the ridgeline of Ling Fell can
be seen on the right

The path branches off right

Slightly higher up and a subsidiary path branches off right that leads to the summit

The shooting butts

Pass the now disused shooting butts on the left
