Walk Overview
We last did this walk in November 2024 here but on that occasion we were robbed
of any views due to the persistant low cloud. Today however was the complete reverse
with wall to wall blue sky and sunshine. It was definitely worth the return journey as the
views were spectacular
There are plenty of routes to get to the start point of this walk. Approaching Lakeland
as we always do from the Northbound M6 at Junction 36, we chose to take the
sign posted road off the A591 at the Plumgarth roundabout and head for Crook along
the A5284. Passing Windermere Golf Club, look out for a minor road on the right
heading towards Low House Farm then follow the signs for High Lickbarrow.
There are a number of off road parking spaces available, the one we chose was
suitable for 2 cars to park freely
From the parking area head South for approximately 200 yards or so
and look out for a gate on the left
Through the gate to start the walk.
Crossing the first field keep to the tree line and wall as it was less muddy
The path drops down a little in to an intake field
Cross the intake field and head for the gate
Through the gate and up the steps turning left at the top
Follow the road round to the right
Passing "Old Droomer" House
This is the start of the popular dog walk in truth. Through the gate and
follow the path
The old signpost points the way
The grass track splits, we followed the right hand track
The track rises gently as it leads towards a gate
Looking back along the track and the views start to open up
Through the gate a pick up the trail on the right that leads to the summit
Keep to the obvious grass track that leads to the high ground
The summit even though it has no cairn is easily picked out

A wonderful view across Windermere towards the Coniston Fells
Looking towards the Langdale Pikes, Crinkle Crags and Bowfell
We set off on the path to Grandsire which drops down past School Knott Tarn
this is very easy walking
The path leads down to a gate in the wall. Go through it and veer left
The track runs parallel with the Tarn before it branches off and climbs
up to Grandsire
Passing School Knott Tarn
The path starts to climb steadily
Approaching the summit of Grandsire

Looking across to the Langdale Pikes from the summit of Grandsire
A clear grass trod drops down in the general direction of the Dales Way main path.
In truth there are a number of grassy trods that all do the same. we chose the
most obvious
The track passes a number of sheep pens and swings left to the Dales Way track
The Dales Way track is seen running across this picture. The summit of
School Knott Nameless 1 is the high ground further ahead
The track follows the line of an old broken wall and leads to the highest point
This path leads directly to the summit which is in effect just a large
stone on top of a wall

Not the most inspiring of summits you will ever visit
Drop back down to the Dales Way path and turn left to get back to the start
The path leads to a gate in a boundary wall
Through the gate and turn immediate left
Go through another gate
The path now heads back to High Lickbarrow and is easy to follow
The path becomes more rocky
The track eventually leads to a gate in the wall and the popular
dog walkers trails
Through the gate and shortly take the left hand track
The track eventually leads back to a small road that passes the tiny Hamlet
go through the gate and turn left to get back to the road
At the end of the lane turn right to return to the car
Returning back to the parked car about 300 yards or so down the lane
