Walk Overview
A charming short walk with great views and one which would be an ideal "starter"
fell for someone wishing to get a flavour for Fell walking
Approaching Elterwater from Ambleside via Chapel Stile, an NT car park on the
right just before you enter the village is the start point for this walk
From the car park follow the tarmac road round OR take the stone path, either way
you meet a public footpath on your left that leads upto Huntingstile Gap, the dip
in the picture below
Huntingstile Gap
Take the signposted footpath that climbs gently up the slope
At the top of the Gap the views open up towards Dunmail Raise and Seat Sandal
Follow the path that leads you gently to ascend Huntingstile Crag. The view here is
from the small cairn across to the Coniston range of Fells
From the cairn follow the clear path that sweeps round the left of Dow Bank.
You may if you wish avoid the climb over the top, however it is very gentle and
has fine views to be had
Approaching the side path
The view from the top of Dow Bank towards Crinkle Crags and Bowfell
Looking North towards Helm Crag
From the front marker cairn, the summit of Silver Howe is seen for the first time
which is the high point of the ridgeline
Follow the clearly defined path to gain access to the ridgeline. As you approach the
crags keep right and leave the main path which carries on towards Blea Rigg
The "big" cairn as AW described in his chapter for this walk
Following the ridge path to the summit. When you reach this fork take the right hand
path that leads directly to the top
Grasmere and Rydal Water on the way to the summit
On the summit of Silver Howe and it was freezing. The views to the Langdales
are superb. Click here for a 360 degree view
