Walk Overview

Our previous attempt at bagging Ullock Pike had to be aborted due to dangerously
high winds that made the ridge walk from Long Side hazardous. The day we chose
today was one of those heaven sent days weather wise with absolutely perfect
conditions for climbing

The start of the walk

From the A66 towards Keswick take a right turn along the A591 towards Carlisle and
head for the clearly signposted Ravenstone Manor Hotel. The free car park just before
the Hotel on the right proved to be popular today with space at a premium. There are
a few roadside verges on the approach for a limited number of cars.

The gate in the fence

After a short while a gate in the fence gives access to the open Fell side

Heading towards the ridge line

The path leads steeply up to gain the ridgeline of Ullock Pike seen here rising
to the right. Straightforward navigation

will see us  get onto the ridgeline proper

The rocky outcrops

One of the trickiest parts of the climb where the icy rock outcrops made for
slow progress; however, no problem for some!

The Watches

On the way back down and we pass "The Watches" - not an old Druid Stone
Circle, but a natural rock outcrop in a predominantly grassy area

Looking towards Grisedale Pike

As the sun sets we make our way back down and catch the last of the light
over Grisedale Pike. A fantastic day to be out on the Lakeland Fells
